Why Do We Pray In The Spirit?

Main idea

As believers, the Lord has given us a simple yet powerful gift—the gift of praying in the Spirit. But what is the significance of praying in the Spirit? And when should we practice it?

In this session, we will explore the benefits of praying in the Spirit and see how the Lord has given us this gift to help us in situations where we feel helpless, to build us up, and to guide us in our daily lives.

You can participate in this digital care group session on your own or with your friends and family. Feel free to use this guide to follow the conversation with our pastors, use it for your time of study, or to facilitate more conversations with your community.

This session is based on the message:

  • Joseph Prince—Speak Your Way To A Long, Happy Life (Aug 27, 2023) [Sermon notes]

1. Praying in the Spirit—a new covenant gift

As a believer, God has given you a simple yet powerful gift—the gift of praying in the Spirit.

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit never dwelled in people. He would only come upon them at certain times and then leave. However, in the New Testament, because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross, you have been made so clean that the Holy Spirit can dwell and live in you today (John 14:17)!

And because the Spirit now dwells in you, you have ready access to this powerful prayer language. When you pray in the Spirit, it releases His power into every area of your life and causes you to win. Don’t settle for a life that’s less than God’s best when He has already given you a key to walking in victory!

2. When you have no words to pray

“What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.”
— 1 Corinthians 14:15

Have you ever found yourself in a difficult situation and unsure about how or what to pray? It could be a family issue that seems impossible, a financial crisis you have no solution for, or a persistent health problem that leaves you feeling helpless. The Bible assures us that regardless of your challenge, the Holy Spirit can pray accurate prayers and will cause these obstacles to dissolve before you.

When you’re facing a difficult or seemingly impossible situation, pray in the Spirit.

3. The rest and refreshing

“For with stammering lips and another tongue
He will speak to this people,
To whom He said, “This is the rest with which
You may cause the weary to rest,”
And, “This is the refreshing”;
Yet they would not hear.”
— Isaiah 28:11–12

When you pray in the Spirit, God’s rest and refreshing uproot stress in your life. Moreover, the Holy Spirit Himself teaches you all things! When you feel like you have exhausted all your strength and smarts, this powerful gift can unlock success, breakthrough, and healing in areas that may have previously seemed impossible.

4. Praying in the Spirit builds you up from the inside out

“He who speaks in a tongue edifies (oikodomeo) himself…”
— 1 Corinthians 14:4a

In the Greek, the word “edifies” means “to build a house, erect a building…to restore by building, to rebuild, repair.”

TALK IT OVER

Is there an area of your life that needs rebuilding?

Whenever you pray in the Spirit, you are building yourself up in every way—spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

5. Own the Word

OWN THE WORD

Pray in the Spirit

Are there areas in your life where you struggle to find the right words to pray or feel helpless in?

Write them down in your journal or the notes app on your phone. Bring your concerns to the Lord and pray over them by praying in the Spirit. You can begin by praying, “Holy Spirit, these are the situations in my life I don’t have the answers for. Right now, as I pray in the Spirit over them, I believe You are praying perfect prayers on my behalf, and You will supply the need and the answers for these situations.” Then, start to pray in the Spirit.

Something powerful happens while you are praying in the Spirit because the Holy Spirit Himself, who is more powerful than you, is praying and interceding for you!

Questions about this topic

Do you have a question that you would like answered from this care group session? Here are some thoughts from the team that we would like to share.
  • Can every believer pray in the Spirit, or is it a special gift exclusively reserved for pastors and leaders of the church?

Praying in the Spirit is a gift you receive when you believe the truth that Jesus’ blood has paid for the forgiveness of all your sins. This gift is unique to the new covenant and is only available to those who know they are forgiven of their sins because of the finished work of Christ. You cannot earn or merit this gift; it is something you freely receive.

If you have yet to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, check out this video from Pastor Prince and receive this powerful gift from the Lord that will transform your life!
